“It takes me back to when I was a child in the inner city where food was a lot scarcer. When your neighbor up the street couldn’t get out or had health issues, so you took what you had and shared with them. To me the food bank is that neighborhood, that village I grew up in. It lets me know that I’m not alone — lets me know that people still care for people.”
“We know what it’s like to struggle — nobody there to help you out, people turning their back on you … We don’t ever want to be that way. Whatever it takes for us, we’re going to make sure that people can get food.”
Generous support from public and private sources allowed the food bank to provide food and funds directly to community organizations across the state.
Victory Villa, located in Middle River, is one of the Maryland Food Bank’s statewide partner that was not only able to stay open and keep feeding their hungry neighbors when COVID-19 struck, but actually do more to help some of the more vulnerable members of their community.
Senior hunger touches far too many people in Maryland. From people living in senior communities to multi-generational living situations, more than 45,000 Marylanders experience food insecurity, and that number is on the rise.
