Maryland Food Bank Travels to Annapolis for First-Ever Advocacy Day
Staff and Volunteers Share Top Priorities for the 2025 Legislative Session
On a bright and cold January day, staff and volunteers of the Maryland Food Bank arrived in Annapolis with a message for state lawmakers: We need YOU in the fight to end hunger.
About 2 million people in Maryland face food insecurity. And while the Maryland Food Bank is helping to address our neighbors’ immediate needs for nutritious food, we know that state-level policies and programs are a key part of building a resilient food system that works for everyone.
Despite the freezing morning, the first-ever Maryland Food Bank Advocacy Day started off with a warm welcome. As the day’s session began, Delegate Aletheia McCaskill of Baltimore County welcomed the “sea of red” to the statehouse, noting both the food bank’s role in distributing nutritious food to neighbors in need across the state, as well as our culinary training program, FoodWorks.
Throughout the morning, about 20 food bank staff and volunteers traversed the statehouse, sharing copies of our 2025 Legislative Agenda. Legislators also met with Maryland Food Bank staff to talk about what hunger looks like in their districts.
“Our first Advocacy Day demonstrated that legislators understand the powerful impact of food insecurity on their constituents–and the importance of working collaboratively to mitigate its effects. We are so grateful of their support of the Maryland Food Bank’s efforts to end hunger.”
