The Secret Sauce of Giving: Changemaker McDonogh School’s Roots Farm

For more than 150 years, Owings Mills’ McDonogh School has been fueling minds. And since 2023, the school has been fueling bodies and fighting hunger with pasta sauce, passion, and partnership.

The sauce is made from fresh ingredients from the school’s on-campus Roots Farm, a community garden that has blossomed into 10-acre teaching and learning space for students of all ages. The sauce is currently available at the Roots Farm Store, as well as grocers like Santoni’s Marketplace, Chester River Wine & Cheese, Hidden Waters Farms, and Welcome Home, with $1 per jar going to the Maryland Food Bank.

“Working with the Maryland Food Bank extends our mission beyond the farm. Together, we turn every harvest at Roots Farm into fresh, local nourishment for Maryland families.”

Farmer/Changemaker, Roots Farm

The McDonogh School’s support of the Maryland Food Bank extends far beyond their delicious pasta sauce. A valued Farm to Food Bank partner, Roots Farm donated more than 5,200 pounds of fresh produce last year alone!  end story icon
