Facing Off Against Hunger: Hockey Donkeys are Changemakers
While “put the biscuit in the basket” may be common ice hockey slang for shooting the puck into the net, one local team—the Hockey Donkeys—made it it literal through their “Face Off Against Hunger” event, resulting in the donation of $13,000 and nearly 1,000 meals (1,083 lbs. of food) to the Maryland Food Bank.
Each August, the Hockey Donkeys host their “Give Back Tournament” at Skate Frederick to support the local community, and for the 2025 event, the organization chose the Maryland Food Bank!
“We wanted to have a broader impact in Maryland, and as we did our research, the Maryland Food Bank came up as the organization that ensures people are getting healthy meals – and it was really powerful when the CEO came out and said one in three people were food insecure. I think that was kind of eye-opening for us,” said Keith Swaim, General Manager of the Hockey Donkeys.
Recently appointed Maryland Food Bank President & CEO Meg Kimmel was thrilled to “drop the puck” and kick the event off:
“It’s an honor to be part of this movement, and I am humbled to be able to be out in communities like Frederick, where amazing groups like the Hockey Donkeys are rallying local communities to lift up their neighbors in need,” she said. ![]()
