Using Magic to Gather the Community: Adam Melfa is a Changemaker

Adam Melfa has two passions: community and cards. Magic: The Gathering cards, that is.

While working at the Community College of Baltimore County and Towson University, Adam Melfa often heard that food was the first thing students gave up when they experienced financial challenges. To provide support, he formed partnerships with local organizations and businesses to build a safety net for students in crisis. In his free time, Adam also enjoys the collectible card game, Magic: The Gathering (MTG).

Realizing that community was the common ground between his professional and personal passions, Adam is changing the game for neighbors facing food insecurity by hosting MTG gameplay fundraising events for the Maryland Food Bank.

On January 31, Adam gathered 74 Marylanders at Peabody Heights Brewery for an epic, 10-hour event featuring MTG gameplay tables, as well as raffles with prizes from Moon Valley Farm, Thread Coffee Roasters, Peabody Heights Brewery, Nepenthe Brewing, and Michelle’s Granola.

Due to a generous matching donation from longtime food bank friend T. Rowe Price, Adam’s community-building efforts mean even more neighbors can gather around their tables for a meal!end story icon

“Having experienced it and seeing people that have experienced food insecurity; and coming from a family that’s culturally very Italian American, food, and especially food security is important to me.”
