Clashing with Hunger: Patuxent Roller Derby Members are Changemakers
In case you missed Patuxent Roller Derby’s recent Saturday morning “Cartoon Clash” bout between the Salty Beaches and Kraken Skulls, the Beaches prevailed, by a score of 217-133.
But the real winners were neighbors in need.

On March 7, at Dundalk’s Skateland Northpoint, the community rallied around the league’s event, purchasing tickets; donating shelf-stable foods; participating in a 50/50 raffle, games, and bake sales; as well as making direct financial contributions to support our efforts to feed hungry Marylanders.
“We just want to help central Maryland. Giving back to an area that supports our inclusive league and letting us use their resources is really important in ensuring that we’re serving the community beyond just our own selves.”
According to Stalker Down, the Cartoon Clash theme came from a team discussion about which non-profit to help. “We saw breakfast items on your high needs list, and our bouts take place on Saturdays at breakfast time, so we thought it was a good collaboration.”![]()

This is a sharp and intellectually stimulating analysis that brilliantly deconstructs the ‘cultural architecture’ of community activism and the critical importance of grassroots mobilization in the evolution of modern hunger relief. I particularly appreciate the way the feature highlights how the shift from traditional volunteerism to high-impact, mission-aligned athletic advocacy serves as a vital bridge between the abstract mechanics of food distribution and a profound, lived experience of communal empowerment—it’s a powerful reminder that the most resonant philanthropic environments are those that prioritize procedural integrity, ethical complexity, and the strategic interrogation of the stories that shape our shared progress. The insight into how these participatory frameworks function as both a practical toolkit for the contemporary changemaker and a sophisticated roadmap for the future of the Maryland Food Bank community is a fantastic and deeply moving observation. Thank you for sharing such a clear and focused perspective on the intersection of sport, strategy, and the seeker’s heart!
